Venue

Kulturraffinerie-(c)-Kulturraffinerie-K714Over 100 years ago, Europe’s most modern lubricating oil refinery was built on the banks of the Rhine in Monheim with the involvement of Shell, a company that was just gaining a foothold in Germany at the time. The innovative architecture inside what is now an industrial landmark and the many stories experienced by countless generations make the site an extraordinary venue for culture and community, right on the Rhine.

The history of this place is inextricably linked to the region’s industrial development. The architecture of the original factory building bears witness to the innovative spirit of the early 20th century; its distinctive reinforced concrete column structure - one of the first examples of this type of building in Germany - and its striking brick facade formed the backbone of local industry for decades.

Following the extensive restoration of the existing structure and the construction of a new, multifunctional event space with state-of-the-art acoustics - capable of accommodating between 500 and nearly 5,000 people - additional new buildings to the south and north will create a complex featuring additional conference rooms, a restaurant with a rooftop bar, and a small hall located in the originally preserved barrel-filling hall.

Starting in the Fall of 2026, the K714 Cultural Refinery at Rhine kilometer 714 will open to the public and be celebrated with a grand opening.
