Christian Benning – Multi Percussionist

Praised by the international press as ‘a phenomenon’ (Sueddeutsche Zeitung), ‘rhythmic genius’ (Die ZEIT) and ‘full of elegant perfection’ (Kōbe Newspaper), recent performances of the established multi percussionist Christian Benning attract a great deal of attention worldwide. His exuberant joy of playing and virtuoso technique have catapulted the 30-year-old's international career to the top of his generation of percussionists. His captivating performances as a soloist as well as with his ensemble (Christian Benning Percussion Group) have recently taken place in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Glocke in Bremen, the Herkulessaal and the Prinzregententheater in Munich, the Kraftwerk in Berlin, the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, the Musikverein in Graz, the Duomo in Milan, the Pavilion Mies van der Rohe in Barcelona, the Borusan Music House in Istanbul, the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, the George Enescu Hall in Bucharest, the Church of the Redeemer in Jerusalem, the Egyptian State Opera in Cairo, the Royal Opera House in Muscat, the Abbey in San Diego, the Griswold Hall in Baltimore or at the United Nations in New York. In 2023, he and his Percussion Group performed the first percussion concert at the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, and in 2024, he celebrated debuts as soloist and ensemble director in Boston, Washington D.C. and at the Biennale Musica in Venice. In 2025, he primarily performed in South America (at the Cathedral of Cusco and the Gran Teatro Nacional in Lima a.o.), in Hong Kong (Kowloon Cricket Stadium) as well as in Japan (in Kobe, Tokyo, Yokohama and at the Expo in Osaka).

In addition to numerous international competition successes and concert tours through Asia, Africa, Europe and North America, the versatile percussionist regularly performs with renowned ensembles and instrumentalists. He has recently been collaborating in various chamber music projects with Simone Rubino, Juan de la Rubia, Hansjörg Albrecht, Cameron Carpenter, Johannes Obermeier, the Arcis Saxophone Quartet and the Neeb Piano Duo. Concerts in these line-ups have already taken him to the Rheingau Music Festival, Heidelberger Frühling, La Folle Journée, or the Teatro Romano di Verona. His musical expressiveness has enriched numerous recording productions in collaboration with Deutschlandfunk and the television and radio stations of BR, SWR, HR, WDR and NDR, released by labels such as Genuin, Prospero or Audite, where he also recorded own compositions. In addition, Christian Benning plays the timpani with the Munich Bach Orchestra, the Munich Chamber Orchestra and the Port Louis State Orchestra and has been member of the Musica Libera ensemble since 2025. His passion for sharing his artistic expertise and nurturing young talent regularly takes him to give workshops and masterclasses, recently teaching at conservatories and academies in Germany, Italy, Spain, Romania, Israel or Mauritius. As a scholar of the German Scholarship Foundation, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and as cultural award winner of the Sueddeutsche Zeitung and the City of Pasing, he is involved in a long-term, interdisciplinary collaboration with Dirk Nowitzki’s mentor Holger Geschwindner. In this project, he is researching a rhythm-aided training concept for team sports. A notation system invented by Benning, including a visualisation software, forms the basis of his sports psychology PhD, which he has been pursuing since 2022 at Brunel University of London; in 2025, he was awarded with research grants in the United Kingdom as well as in Germany. In 2023, he was artist-in-residence at the Music Festival in Bayreuth and was awarded the Westphalian Music Prize in 2024, and the Music Prize of the State Capitol of Munich in 2026.

Christian Benning holds the post-graduate degree “Excellence in Performance” from the University of Music and Theatre in Munich, where he was enrolled during pre-college, his bachelor's and his master's, studying with Peter Sadlo, Arnold Riedhammer, Raymond Curfs, Adel Shalaby and Alexej Gerassimez. He gained further study experience in the USA with Robert van Sice at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. Masterclasses and joint concerts with Evelyn Glennie, Martin Grubinger, Lang Lang, András Schiff, Leon Fleisher and Kent Nagano, as well as collaborations with and premiering works by Wolfgang Rihm, Paul Lansky and Samir Odeh-Tamimi a.o. have added to his formative artistic impulses. Since 2023, Christian Benning is a Yamaha artist, and since 2019, endorsed by Meinl Cymbals, Meinl Percussion, Meinl Stick&Brush, Meinl Sonic Energy, SchlagZu and AlternateMode, as well as outfitted by van Laack.
